Delivery of Transmitter units for EISCAT 3D Next Generation Incoherernt Scatter Radar

The serial production of the SAT (Sub-Array Transmitter) units is ready for shipment. EISCAT has placed the orders of the contract options to increase the number of SAT units. The EISCAT 3D system is planned to yield a peak power of 5 MW. The radar stations situated in Norway, Sweden and Finland will consist of a total of approximately 20 000 radar transmitters.

EISCAT 3D will be a radar system for the scientific study of Earth’s atmosphere and ionosphere. It will use a technique called Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR) to measure basic physical parameters of the ionospheric plasma and upper atmosphere near Earth. This kind of system supports the study of phenomena such as the aurora borealis (northern lights) and noctilucent clouds.

Previously DA-Group has delivered the First Stage Receiver Units (FSRU) for EISCAT 3D. The FSRU delivery consisted of low noise amplifier, analogue-to-digital converter and the beamformer signal processing for each of the E3D antennas at the three sites.

DA-Group has designed, tested and manufactured in-house both the transmitter and receiver units from start to finish for this significant 3D radar project. The production includes circuit boards, mechanics, cabling, assembly and testing. The modules are placed in containers, which together form an area the size of a football field.

DA-Group provides Space Situational Awareness (SSA) radar systems and related technologies for Satellite Surveillance and Tracking (SST). SSA can be formed actively by radars or passively by tracking electromagnetic spectrum. We have the capability to form SSA/SST by both methods. EISCAT 3D radar stations are an excellent example of forming SSA by our radar technology.
