A radiometer is an instrument used to detect temperature by non-contact measurement. The thermal radiation of the object to be measured causes radio-frequency radiation, which is measured by a sensitive receiver. These receivers are used in weather satellites. The weather satellite orbits and scans the Earth's surface, providing data on such things as sea-surface temperature, sea-ice concentration and salinity. This information can be used to predict the weather and better prepare for different weather phenomena.

DA-Group supplies radiometers and radiometer calibration systems. The calibration equipment is used to electronically generate the desired thermal radiation with high accuracy, which is used as a reference for measurements. The radiometer calibration system we have developed ensures more accurate and reliable measurement data.

This research project is a part of the EU space program and the Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) project. The scope was to investigate solutions for the accuracy of measuring temperatures. One possible solution to improve the accuracy of calibration, known at least in theory, was to produce physical temperatures electronically. Italian OHB had recgonized the expertise of DA-Group, and in collaboration we implemented a calibration device.

For the MetOp-SG satellites, DA-Group has produced radiometers for two different instruments: the Microwave Sounder (MWS) and the Microwave Imager (MWI). DA-Group developed 89 GHz radiometers with a sensitive Low Noise Amplifier (LNA). This is the result of more than ten years of technology research projects to develop and apply MHEMT MMIC technologies.

The MetOp programme is carried out in collaboration with EUMETSAT and ESA organisations. DA-Group is a subcontractor to Airbus Defence and Space.




DA-Group is able to provide space-qualified Low Noise Ampliers (LNA) with world-leading performance. Based on MHEMT technology, these are available in a range of frequenes from 50 GHz to 300 GHz.

LNA can be provided in standard single stage packs or more complex multi-stage ampliers with filtering. Frequency conversion can be supplied, designed to order. A fulle range of waveguide sizes is supported. 

For ultra-low noise systems, DA-Group can provide cryogenically cooled packages and perform all needed verification testing, in-house (heritage Planck 70 GHz radiometers).
